The EU has declared the year 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. This places dialogue between the citizens of Europe as a task for everyone at the center of common programmes. The European Commission as well as numerous governments of EU member states are convinced that dialogue is an effective means to build bridges between cultures, religions, ethnicities and languages inside and outside Europe. The Europeans trust that intercultural dialogue will assist them to make themselves heard in the world and that it will create and expand meaningful partnerships.
